Renters Insurance Costs $15/Month and Most People Skip It Anyway

Apr 9, 2026·4 min read

If your apartment burns down tomorrow, your landlord's insurance pays to rebuild the building. It does not pay for your laptop, your couch, your clothes, or a hotel while you find a new place.

Renters insurance covers all of that for typically $10–$20 a month. It also includes liability protection if a guest gets hurt in your unit, and pays for temporary housing if your place becomes uninhabitable.

It's the single highest dollar-for-dollar value in personal insurance, and roughly 60% of renters still don't carry it. Don't be one of them.
