Know before you buy

General liability, explained simply.

Occurrence vs. claims-made

Most GL policies are written on an occurrence basis: they cover incidents that happen during the policy period, even if the claim is filed later. Claims-made policies cover claims filed while the policy is active. Which you're offered varies by carrier.

Per-occurrence and aggregate limits

Your policy has a per-occurrence limit (the most paid for one incident) and an aggregate limit (the most paid during the policy term). Many contracts specify both, so check what your clients require.

What affects the price

Your industry and the risk of your work, revenue or payroll, location, claims history, limits, and deductible. Prices vary by carrier and state.

GL for contractors

Contractors are often asked for a certificate of insurance and to add the client or general contractor as an additional insured. Some policies also include completed-operations coverage for work you've already finished.

FAQ

General liability FAQ

Do I need general liability insurance?+

It's not required by law for most businesses, but many clients, landlords, and general contractors require it before you can work. If you deal with the public or work at other people's property, it's usually a smart foundation.

How much does general liability insurance cost?+

There's no single price. It depends on your industry, revenue or payroll, location, claims history, and the limits you choose. Rates vary by carrier and state, so a quote is the only real answer.

What limits do clients usually ask for?+

Contracts vary. Many specify a per-occurrence limit and a general aggregate limit, and some also ask for additional insured status. Send us the insurance section of your contract and we'll match it.

What's the difference between occurrence and claims-made?+

Occurrence covers incidents that happen while your policy is active, no matter when the claim is filed. Claims-made covers claims filed while the policy is active, which can require extra coverage if you cancel. Availability varies by carrier.

Does general liability cover my employees if they get hurt?+

No. Employee injuries are covered by workers' compensation, not general liability.

Does GL cover my own tools or equipment?+

No. General liability covers damage to other people's property. Your own tools are usually covered by inland marine (tools and equipment) or commercial property coverage.

Do I need GL if I work from home?+

Often yes, if clients visit or you work at their locations. Homeowners policies usually exclude business activities, so don't rely on them.

How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?+

Once your policy is active, certificates can usually be issued quickly. Timing depends on the carrier.
